Originally built as war housing during World War II, the housing complex now known as Chickasaw Housing Authority (CHA) was initially meant to accommodate military personnel. After the war, the property, consisting of over 600 apartments called Gulf Homes, was transferred to the Mobile Housing Board by the Affordable Housing Administration (predecessor of HUD). Over time, the City of Chickasaw recognized the need to establish a Housing Authority to address the crime issues arising from the Mobile Housing Board property. Consequently, in 1961, the Chickasaw Housing Authority was established and took ownership of Gulf Homes. The Housing Authority sold off most of the deteriorated war housing structures and, by 1967, constructed 288 new units of affordable housing, which are still in operation today.
